Born Joseph Anthony Bonner at Rock Hall, St. Andrew, Jamaica
the artist known as Spanner Banner has emerged as one of
Jamaica’s most prominent artists to date. He was the
first sibling to receive critical mainstream success in
a musical family that includes Bonner siblings ‘Richie
Spice’, ‘Snatcha Lion’, ‘Jah Mikes’
and Pliers of the legendary musical duo, Chakademus and
Pliers.
Spanner Banner received his major ‘buss’ at
an early age with his first single 'Life Goes On', produced
by Winston Riley in the 1990’s. The song dominated
the charts locally as well as internationally. Other hit
songs like, 'Live and Learn', 'Michelle', and 'Tease me,
Tease me', were situated on the top ten British Reggae Music
Chart.
Since
his inspiration stems from the legendary musician Bob Marley,
it was only fitting, after the reeling success of his debut
song, that Spanner Banner was signed to Island Records.
His debut album, 'Chill', produced by Sly & Robbie,
further cemented his mark on the Jamaican Reggae music scene
as it attained international recognition. The album included
the hits, ‘What We Need Is Love', 'You Gotta Be',
'Universal Love' and 'Cheater'.
During
his expansive career, Spanner worked with some of the most
prominent producers in the industry including King Jammys,
Jeremy Harding, Bobby Digital and Clive Hunt. Spanner left
Island Records in 1996, and ventured out on his own.
He launched his own imprint, 'Sweet Angel Productions',
on which he released, the critically acclaimed album 'Lovers
Story.' Lover’s Story dropped hit songs such as 'Ladies
Night' (featuring Sean Paul), and 'Tears in the Rain'.
After
the success of Lover’s Story, he released the world-renowned
album 'Real Love' on Heart Beat Records. After a decade
of chart-topping hits, his success was encapsulated on the
'Spanner Banner’s Greatest Hits' album on The Twin
Brothers record label.
Spanner
Banner toured extensively in North America, Europe, Africa,
and the Caribbean. He relocated to the United Kingdom where
he performed and recorded for a number of years. He later
returned to Jamaica and immediately began work with his
brother Richie Spice, Chuck Fender, and Anthony Cruz, under
the Fifth Element record label.
Under
the management of 5th Element, Spanner completed another
widespread tour of the United States with Richie Spice,
in 2005 and 2006 where he performed at huge festivals such
as 'Reggae on the River', 'Westchester Reggae Fest’,
Elite Ark, New York., etc. Spanner continues to perform
locally in Jamaica at ‘Island Explosion’, ‘All
Spice Culture in the Hills’, ‘A St. Mary Mi
Come From’, ‘Guinness Sting’, Rebel Salute’
and several other festivals in the Caribbean.
His
new album is scheduled to be released this summer and will
feature some of Jamaica's finest producers. The album includes
songs like 'Make Me Hot' (featuring Anthony B), 'Bright
Fire' (on Pauperous label) and 'One Love' (done on the Heavenly
rhythm) produced by Don Corleon. Spanner Banner has proven
himself to be a gifted and talented singer/songwriter/producer
and performer in the Reggae Music Industry for an impressive
number of years.
